Summer may be coming to an end, but your plans to travel don't have to be. The ever-growing list of Black-owned hotels & resorts will make planning your girls' trip, baecation, or the fun-filled family getaway much easier, especially since society has shown people of color that we are not always welcomed nor properly accommodated while staying at their hotels.
Just the other day, I saw a video on Facebook of a Black woman detailing how uncomfortable she and her family were during their stay at a South Carolina hotel. She posted a picture of a confederate flag hanging up by the pool while other white patrons were in the hot tub. She even said a staff member invited themselves into her room while she was changing, which is wrong on so many levels.
Although it is 2021, inclusivity is still struggling, even in the hospitality industry. In the early 1900s, Black Americans used The Green Book as a guide for travel in the United States. It was a resource for hotels, restaurants, gas stations, entertainment, and key directions for safe traveling in a racist America. However, it was also a powerful marketing tool to highlight black-owned businesses and entrepreneurship.
When traveling domestically or internationally, everyone has the right to be treated with the utmost respect + hospitality, especially when spending your money. Here I have listed hotels & resorts where your accommodations shouldn't be an issue—support one of these Black-owned hotels or resorts on your next trip.
